We call them toys, but they are very much more than that. Our three children, now ten, eight and three all had or currently have developmental issues.Thankfully, in our case all were discovered early by their mother, my wife Jennifer. Jennifer trained as an Early Childhood Educator and worked in the field for a little over twenty years. Not to belittle the efforts of the therapists who did an outstanding job, whether it was speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy or aqua-therapy, at the heart of every therapy session were the educational toys. None of the great work that was done with my children could have been accomplished without educational toys.Today, my boys at eight and ten are honor role students and participate in age appropriate activity without any signs of or interference from the difficulties they faced at the beginning of their lives. My daughter, at two year old, is progressing well and will undoubtedly achieve the same success.As a physician or therapist in pediatric practice, you know the value of educational toys as tools in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of speech/language, gross and fine motor, cognitive and communication disorders and delays. As an educator of young children you know the value of educational toys in promoting and accelerating speech/language, gross and fine motor, cognitive, and social skill development in the children you teach. As a parent you will be, as I was, astounded by a toy's ability to entice your child to learn, to promote innate abilities and develop new skills, but by far the greatest joy you will get is in sharing in your child's achievements and the confidence those achievements inspire. Although educational toys are intuitive and don't usually need much instruction, their impact can be enhanced with suggestions on how they can be employed. Whether you are dealing with your own children or children in a professional setting, if you should request suggestions on how to best employ an educational toy or which toy would be best for your intended purpose we will be only too happy to share our experience.
